History of the Tournament
The Crookhorn Tournament was initially the idea of Derek Nethercot, an archer who contributed significantly to Archery in the Portsmouth and Isle of Wight area in the late sixties and early seventies. The idea behind the shoot was to provide a tournament for club level archers, and as such we have resisted requests to apply to make it a Record Status event.
The first event was held in 1978 at the Crookhorn School sports hall (from whence the shoot gets its name). This turned out to be a very wet Sunday and as luck would have it, the roof of the sports hall leaked. The entire shoot was conducted with water falling from the roof and archers bravely shared the Line with an ever filling bucket.
Since those days the shoot has been held every year, moving from Crookhorn, to Southdowns College, then to Havant Leisure Centre and finally to the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth. It has developed from its initial two sessions with ninety archers to three sessions with some three hundred archers involved. It was the first 'Indoor Open Tournament' in the area, except for the Hampshire County Indoor Championships, which were held at that time in Calshot. The Crookhorn has become a prestigious tournament and over the years has had some notable dignitaries as either Lord or Lady Paramount, including the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and the Mayor of Havant.
We have an array of trophies covering Ladies, Gents and Juniors for both 'single' and 'double' Portsmouth rounds in Recurve, Compound and Longbow styles. Most recently we have introduced an 'Improvers Award' for all those competing in two consecutive years with the same style of bow.
